Between the years 2013-1016 more than two millions of people have attempted to cross the EasternMediterranean Sea, seeking refuge in the European Union. The often-morbid outcome of thesejourneys, as well as the lack of coherent relief strategies regarding survivors, have inspired manyto describe this as the worst humanitarian crisis of our century: one that has reshaped radicallydemographic realities in the broader region, triggering reactions that range from xenophobia andisolationism to new forms of solidarity. In more ways than one, population displacement in theEastern Mediterranean has become an issue of consuming international concern. This courseprovides a mechanism of analyzing the complex dynamics that have shaped the issue by referenceto past influences, present contingencies, and potential future developments.

Historical Archaeology of Slavery covers the period of European contact, world-wide, from 900-1850 AD when European nations expanded their maritime empires to the New World, Africa and Asia. It encompasses the Age of Mercantile Capitalism, where plantations were established in overseas colonies and where the trans-Atlantic slave trade evolved to provide a massive labor force. The demographic consequences of these processes included relocation of millions of African and Asian people, the decimation of indigenous societies, and the disappearance of medieval lifeways as the rise of capitalism bred the cities and slums of the modern world.

The Spring 2017 Honors Colloquium (1:090:112) will use SAS Honors Program’s writer-in-residence, Paul Blaney’s short new novel, Mister Spoonface, as the starting point for a discussion of some of the most pressing issues of our age. We will debate issues that affect our private and public lives in the early 21st century, such as the planet’s surging population, privacy rights and cyber security, reproductive technologies, gender, family, and parenting.

Are mass publics irrational? Can they assess risk and exercise rational judgement on emotional policy issues such as crime? Many scholars conclude they cannot and argue that the power of democratic publics should thus be highly circumscribed. This book explores this claim in cross-national context and argues against this conventional view.

This scholarship, which was established by Professor Helen Berman of the Rutgers University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in memory of her parents, provides funding for a research stipend for a member of the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program in support of an eight-week, full-time summer research experience. The recipient is known as a Bernstein Scholar, and receives a research stipend in the amount of $4,000. The research is to be completed working with a faculty member within one of the research groups affiliated with either the Center for Integrative Proteomics Research (http://proteomics.rutgers.edu) or the Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine (http://iqb.rutgers.edu), providing opportunities that blend physical and biological research using advanced technology and methods. The David and Dorothy Bernstein Scholarship for Summer Research thus provides undergraduate students with an exceptional opportunity for study.

To be eligible to apply, a student must be a member in good standing of the SAS Honors Program.  There are no restrictions in connection with previous research experience, major, or financial need; however, applicants must have a graduation date of May 2018 or later. Students in the Class of 2020 are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must submit a completed application form and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (preferably someone in a science discipline). Would you like to: Conduct research rather than just reading about it? Study important topics in health and health policy? Prepare for graduate school in a health research field? Contribute your perspective and experience to a team of health researchers? Spend your summer earning academic credit and money while learning important research skills?

If you've answered yes to these questions, Project L/EARN might be for you!

The program is an intensive, hands-on summer research training internship for undergraduate students from groups that have been previously under-represented in graduate schools and health research. Eight to ten interns are selected annually from colleges and universities nationwide to participate in a ten-week residential internship at Rutgers University. During the summer, they obtain research skills and "hands-on" experience in health research through a combination of coursework on statistics, research methods, research writing, ethics and health topics and an individual research project under the guidance of a distinguished faculty mentor. Many continue to conduct research during the academic year with their summer mentor or a faculty researcher at their home institution.

Applications are now open, and are due Monday, February 6, 2017.

The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) invites applications for a ten-week paid summer research internship for undergraduate students (rising juniors or seniors) in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The program will be held from May 21 to July 27, 2017 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. MURAP seeks to prepare talented and motivated underrepresented students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, or those with a proven commitment to diversity and to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and the academy, for graduate study in fields in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts.

Columbia Business School (CBS) is seeking outstanding applicants for the 2017 Summer Research Internship program.  The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and exposes the students to the world of business research.  Several of the top interns have gone on to leading MS and PhD programs in Economics, Finance, Computer Science and Data Sciences.  Many have been selected to join CBS afterwards as full-time Research Associates.

Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: Finance, Economics, Marketing, Management, Decision Sciences, Operations, Accounting, and Data Analytics.

This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all backgrounds, including Business, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, are encouraged to apply.

Do you have training in dance? Do you like teaching others? Then here is a position for you! Volunteer for the New Brunswick 4-H teaching dance to kids in New Brunswick through a free monthly dance program Friday afternoons at the New Brunswick Public Library.
