Hey School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program Students!

There are several important events this week! Don't miss them!

Honors Events

Spring 2017 Richard D. Heffner Open Mind Lecture: Access to Justice with Martha Minow

Americans who cannot afford legal help routinely forfeit basic rights. It is not the facts of their case and not governing low, but their poverty and the design of the American legal system that is to blame. With a focus on noncriminal issues, this talk will address the crisis faced by survivors of domestic violence, returning veterans seeking to access benefits, low-income entrepreneurs, and others due to the cost and complexity of law, plans to eliminate federal support for civil legal assistance, and the operations of courts and agencies that make law both inaccessible and unenforceable for many pople until we have political, technological, and de-regulatory reforms.

New Departmental Honors Course Fall 2017: Balkan Wars and WWI (489:390:01)

Instructor:  Elektra Kostopoulou

Far from being limited only to military confrontations, World War I (1914-1918) constituted a milestone that changed perceptions of and realities in modern Europe on many fronts. Its truly global origins and connotations extended not only beyond the battlefield but also beyond Europe’s territorial limitations. This class invites students to think of WWI within the context of global trajectories and by reference to socioeconomic, environmental, political, and ideological factors that gradually transformed states, communities, and individuals. Identifying new trends in the study of the period and offering an alternative periodization of the Great War, the class will start with a discussion of regional clashes that directly preceded it, focusing on the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). There is a focus on humanitarian issues and international law.

"From pixels to objects: How the brain builds a rich representation of the natural visual world" Lecture!

Abstract: Human vision is mediated by a hierarchically organized network of visual areas that represent the increasingly complicated statistical properties of the visual world. Relatively more peripheral visual areas represent simple properties of natural scenes, while relatively more central areas represent object and action categories. In this talk i will review a series of neurophysiological and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies from my laboratory that aim to identify how information in natural images is represented in visual areas across the visual hierarchy. I will also discuss recent studies that show how these visual representations interact with language systems, and how these visual representations are modulated by attention.

Date: Thursday, April 6 | 5 PM
